plot
Commissario Brunetti's wife Paola witnesses the collapse of 25-year-old Davide Cavanello, who helped her with the shopping. The young man was working in his aunt's cleaning department and was apparently mentally handicapped. He dies in the hospital where doctors find that he had an unusual amount of antihypertensive drugs in his blood. When Brunetti and Sergente Vianello visit Davide's mother, she claims to have helped her son die. Neither Paola nor Brunetti can really believe this, but the mother's confession seems to solve the case.
Shortly afterwards, Paola discovers a package of linen in her apartment that Davide wanted to deliver after he was with the Brunettis. She takes it to the recipient, a stonemason, and learns that Davide visited him frequently and created small statues in his workshop. The stonemason states that the boy was withdrawn, but by no means stupid or clumsy. His mother knew nothing of this hidden talent of her son, which makes it clear to Brunetti that her son would certainly not have told her that he wanted to die. However, the prosecution wants the case to be closed and Davide's body cremated.
To get the police to investigate further, Paola makes a false statement. The autopsy reveals that Davide actually had two drugs in his blood, in proportions that only a doctor could have determined. Before the family doctor can be questioned, his lawyer comes and prevents an interview. In addition, a video is leaked to the Brunettis, which shows that Paola did not tell the truth about Davide's breakdown: Brunetti can be blackmailed.
Meanwhile, both Signorina Elettra and Sergente Alvise have obtained background information for Brunetti that shows that Davide comes from his mother's relationship with the wealthy entrepreneur Ludovico Lembo. Davide's aunt discovered an amendment to the law that would make Davide an inheritance candidate and tried to blackmail the Lembos. However, Lembo's wife paid her to have the boy disappear and never emerge as an heir to prevent a scandal. Davide's apparent disability stemmed from being locked in his aunt's back room for the first six years of his life while his mother was in a coma. Through the boarded-up window he saw a statue outside in the square, but not her head, which is why all the statues he made were headless. Signora Lembo is arrested,
